  The topography of Tamil Nadu is delightfully varied and diverse. Of the 1,30,058 sq km land area, 17.6 is covered with forest area. These spreads over the plain and on mountain slopes. Dry lands are bestowed with dry-deciduous forests, thorn forests, scrubs and mangroves. The Western Ghats and a few cooler regions are endowed with moist deciduous, wet evergreen forests, sholas and grasslands.

These hills are ideal havens for elephants, tigers, bisons, monkeys and deer. Of the 3,000 and more plant species found in Tamilnadu, a majority is found in the mixed deciduous forests of this region. One of the most noteworthy flowers is the Kurinji of Kodaikanal, which blooms once in 12 years. Cinchona, from which the anti-malarial drug quinine is extracted, and the medicinal eucalyptus grow abundantly in the Nilgiri hills. Forests of other medicinal herbs are found in Palani hills and Courtallam. Palmyra trees grow profusely in Tirunelveli and its products are used as raw materials for several cottage industries. Rubber is the main plantation crop in Kanyakumari and sandalwood grows in the Javadhu hills of Vellore district.

The sanctuary gets its name from a nearby village and is only 75 Km from Chennai. The bird life (resident & visitors) includes Cormorants, Darters, Herons, Egrets, Open billed Stork, Spoonbill and White Ibis, Little Grebe, Indian Moorhen, Black Winged Stilts, a few migratory ducks and occasionally Grey Pelicans. November to February is the ideal season to
 
  visit the sanctuary.

The winged visitors regulated by biological clocks land at Vedanthangal after the monsoon with amazing clock-work precision and get into the breeding act quietly. The population of the migratory birds swells to around 40,000 by the middle of January.

How to get there: Chennai is the nearest airport and one can motor down a distance of a hundred kilometers, most of it on the well-maintained N H 45. The nearest railhead is Chengalpet (26 km).

When to visit: The best season to visit is from November to January.

When to visit: Between November and January, the tidal mud flats and marshes are covered with Teals, Curlews, Gulls, Terns, Plovers, Sandpipers, Shanks, and Herons and up to 3000 Flamingoes at one time. In the spring, a different set of birds - Coles, Mynas and Barbets are drawn here by the profusion of wild berries. From April to June there's very little activity; the main rainy season is between October and December is well connected through roads.

Kunthakulam bird sanctuary Kunthakulam bird sanctuary is situated 33-km south of Tirunelveli in Nanguneri taluk. Kunthakulam is a small and natural scenic village, which is covered with natural forests and ponds. During the season January to April every year more than 10 thousand birds from various countries like Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, USA, and Australia migrate here and when the season is over the birds return. Udhagamandalam This sanctuary is situated at the tri junction of the three southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. 321 sq. kms of tropical wilderness awaits the visitor. It is a part of the Nilgiris Biosphere. A variety of habitats ranging from tropical evergreen forest, moist mixed deciduous forest, teak forests, secondary grasslands and swamps are found here. The rich bio diversity which harbors 200 species odd birds, to name a few-The Golden Oriole, Paradise flycatcher, Malabar Gray hornbill, Scarlet minimvet, Golden backed woodpecker and Peacock In addition.
 
  There are tigers at Mudumalai, though it takes a lot of luck and determination to spot one of these big cats that are such masters of secrecy. But there are several other creatures of the jungle that can be sighted more easily.

How to get there:
Air: The nearest airport is at Coimbatore, 160-km away.
Rail: The sanctuary is located at a distance of 65-km from Udhagamandalam (OOTY) railway station and 95-km from Mysore station.
Road: Gudalur (16-km) is the nearest town to the sanctuary, which is situated along the Udhagamandalam (OOTY) - Mysore highway. This sanctuary could be reached from Mysore as well. There are regular buses from Udhagamandalam (OOTY), Mysore and the neighbouring towns to the sanctuary.

ooty Located on the high altitudes of the Nilgiris, 40 kms from Udhagamandalam. It contains a viable population of Nigiri Tahr (Hamitrgus-hilocrius), Sambar, Nigiri Marten, Barking deer Located on the high altitudes of the Nilgiris, comprising rolling downs interspersed with temperate shoals, this park is also a part of Nilgiris Bio-sphere reserve and situated 40 km from Udhagamandalam. Trout fishing is recommended in the rivers and lakes of Mukkurthi. Permission from Asst. Director, Fisheries Department, Udhagai, must be obtained in advance for fishing.

The entire Gulf of Mannar abounds in distinguished marine life covering 10,500-sq-kms and 21 islands with continuous stretches of coral reef.
Gulf of Mannar is the first Marine Biosphere Reserve not only in India but also in South East Asia. It is full of coral reefs, Dugong, Turtles and Balano- Glossus. Dolphins could create euphoria to the tourists. The presence of coral reef, flora and fauna
 
  here are in their virgin form. The coral reefs, which surround the islands in the area are highly productive and are often referred to as "Underwater Tropical Rain Forest" and a treasure house for marine ornamental fishes.

This unique marine ecosystem of Gulf of Mannar is one of the richest for biodiversity resources in the Indian subcontinent. The richness of its biodiversity can be gauged from the fact that more than 3,600 species of fauna and flora have been recorded in this reserve. Kurasadai Islands, off Mandapam, boasts of a vast expanse of shallow waters.


Moreover, more than 138 villages and towns spread over five districts depend heavily on the fishery resources of the Gulf. Commercial fishing is done in about 5,500 sq. km. and nearly 50,000 people dwelling in 47 villages along the coastline bordering the Gulf of Mannar depend directly on the biodiversity resources of the biosphere reserve for their livelihood.

periyar wildlife sanctuary Situated in Vandalur, about 35-km from Chennai, the Anna zoological park is one of the latest and modern zoos of India and the biggest in South East Asia. Spreading over an area of 510 hectares of dry evergreen forests with gently undulating terrain, the specially created open island type enclosures with wet and dry moats and enclosures with hidden walls and simulated natural environment make the animals, feel in their natural environment.
 
  The Anna zoological park situated in the outskirts of Chennai was created out of the Reserve Forests of Vandalur. The forests are of dry deciduous and dry evergreen scrub type. It was in the year 1855 the first Zoo in India was established in Chennai; later on in 1979 it was shifted to its present location at Vandalur.

After initial constructions the zoo was opened to public in 1985. After the zoo was inaugurated in 1985, it has undergone a lot of improvement, with new animals making their home and breeding and more and more features like the Jurassic Park, Nocturnal section, reptile section, aquarium, etc.

Now there are as many as 81 enclosures - 6 types of deer from Barking Deer, Sambar, Blackbuck, Nilgai, Sangai, Hog Deer, Wolf, Jackal, Hyena, Llama, Otter, a number of Monkey species from Nigiri Langur to the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque, Baboon, Hanuman Langur and Leaf-capped Langur, an aviary specially for Vedanthangal birds and another for Point Calimere ones, then the higher carnivores like the beautiful tiger, the majestic Lion, Panther, Jaguar, etc. to the Elephants, Giraffes and Camels.
