kodaikanal,hill station in tamilnadu,kodai resort

It is not known who first used this name or what they intended it to mean. The word Kodaikanal is formed from the two Tamil words Kodai and Kanal. Kanal Kanal means dream (or to be specific an illusion). By pronouncing with long Tamil o as Kodai, means Summer. Thus, Kodai Kanal means it is as good as getting water in desert for summer heat.

Another Tamil word for creepers is Valli, the honey collecting daughter of the chief

of the Veddas mountain tribe. The chief and his wife prayed to the Mountain God for a girl-child and their prayers were answered when the chief found a new-born girl child during a hunting expedition. As she was found among creeper plants, they named the child Valli and she grew up as princess of the tribe in Kurinji and became the consort of lord Murugan. The romantic traditions of Murugan in Sangam literature are thus associated with the name Kodaikanal.

How to Reach:
Road
- Almost all distances from Kodaikanal are calculated with the lake as the central point of reference. The nearest airports are Madurai (135 kilometres/84 miles), Trichy (200 kilometres/120 miles) and Coimbatore (170 kilometres/110 miles). The nearest Railway stations are Palani Railway Station (64 kilometres/40 miles) north, Kodai Road Station (80 kilometres/50 miles) south east and Dindigul Railway Junction (100 kilometres (62 mi)) east.

The 2 to 3 hours drive to Kodai via the steep and winding Ghat roads from Batlagundu or Palani is a memorable experience. Travelers may stop at turnouts on the road and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Palani hills. There is a 28 km shortcut from Periyakulam to Kodaikanal via Kumbakarai under construction. Bicycle rentals, taxis, vans and limited city buses are available. Rickshaws are not available.

kolli hills, kolli malai, hill station in tamilnadu Kolli Hills or Kolli Malai is a small mountain range located in central Tamil Nadu in India. The mountains are about 1000 to 1300 m in height and cover an area of approximately 280 km². The Kolli Hills has 70 hair pin bends to reach the top of the hills. The Kolli Hills are part of the Eastern Ghats, which is a mountain range that runs mostly parallel to the east coast of South India. The mountains are relatively untouched by commercial tourism and still retain their natural beauty. The hills are said to be guarded by Kollipavai, the local deity. According to legend, the sages

chose Kolli hills when they were looking for a peaceful place to do their penance. However, the demons invaded the hills to disrupt the penance when the sages began their rituals. The sages prayed to Kollipavai, who according to the myth, chased away the demons with her enchanting smile. The Kollipavai is still worshipped by the people here and her smile is revered. The mountains have several mythological legends associated with them, and often come across as an eerie place in contemporary tales due to the unexplored and less traveled terrain.

The mountain is a site of pilgrimage, because of the Arapaleeswarar temple, which is believed to have a secret path to the Shiva temple in Rasipuram. This Shiva temple is said to have been built by Valvil Ori in the 1st or 2nd century when he ruled this area. "Arappaleeswara sathakam" is the poem which praises the Lord Arappaleeswarar. It is believed that this temple exists during the Sangam period itself.

Two viewpoints - one at Seekuparai and another at Selur Nadu - are being developed to encourage tourism. As of 2007, creation of a park and formation of an approach road to the Seekuparai viewpoint were nearing completion.

ooty hills, tour to ooty, queen of hills The hills were developed rapidly under the British Raj because they were almost entirely owned by private British citizens, unlike the rest of India. Ooty served as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency, and had winding hill roads and a complicated rack railway system built by influential and enterprising British citizens with venture capital from the Madras government. It used to be a popular summer and weekend getaway for the Britishers during the colonial days. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. Its stunning beauty and splendid green

deep valleys made the British name it "Queen of Hills".

How to Reach:
Road - Ooty is situated on National Highway 67. It is connected by road to travelers from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka via the five main accepted Nilgiri Ghat Roads. There is also a road from Karamadai (Coimbatore District) to Ooty via Kotagiri. This road does not pass through Coonoor.

Rail - Ooty is connected to Chennai (formerly Madras) by a nightly connecting train service. Mettupalayam provides the interchange between 'The Nilagiri Passenger' NMR metre gauge service and the Nilgiri Express broad gauge service. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. The NMR was declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in July 2005.

Air - Ooty does not have a civilian airport and is not connected by air. The nearest airport is at Coimbatore which has domestic flights to several major Indian cities and has international flights direct services to Singapore, Sharjah and Colombo. The next nearest airport to Ooty is Calicut Airport which is at a road distance of 146 km west of Ooty.

Though popularly known as Cherrapunji of South India, Valparai remains somewhat untouched. These wild mountain goats inhabit the high ranges and prefer open terrain, cliffs and grass-covered hills, a habitat largely confined to altitudes from 1200 to 2600m. Their territory extended far and wide all along these hills in the past, but, because of hunting and large-scale habitat destruction, they now exist only in a few isolated sites like the Anaimalai Hills.

By Road: Pollachi regular buses fly to Valparai every half an hour. But instead i preferred to take a cab to travel the 64KM journey from Pollachi to reach Valparai.

By Train: From Chennai take a train to Coimbatore ( best option )and a number of buses fly to Pollachi( 40kms from Coimbatore ) from Ukkadam about 5kms from Coimbatore.
